Electronic Cigarettes vs. Regular Cigarettes

blogpost_rectangle (1)

E-Cigarettes 101

Electronic cigarettes look like the real thing; the end glows as you inhale. As you exhale, you puff out a cloud of what looks like smoke, only it’s vapor. Inside the e-cigarette there’s a battery, a heating element and a cartridge that holds nicotine and other liquids and flavourings. Using an e-cigarette is also called “vaping,” because it simulates smoking by vaporizing e-liquid.

Are electronic cigarettes actually safer than regular cigarettes?

So far, evidence suggests that e-cigarettes are in fact safer than regular cigarettes. The biggest danger from tobacco is smoke, and e-cigarettes don’t burn. As well, the levels of dangerous chemicals that e-cigarettes give off is a fraction of what you would normally get from a real cigarette. For those who are addicted to cigarettes, using an e-cigarette is a great option, since they are a safer alternative.

Electronic cigarettes have:

  • no second-hand smoke
  • no smell
  • none of the 4000+ chemicals found in a tobacco cigarette

Electronic cigarettes generate a smoke-like vapor and provide the same hand-to-mouth inhalation experience as smoking. It has been shown to reduce cravings among smokers, not just for nicotine, but also for the relaxation associated with inhaling and exhaling vapor.

Anti-aging treatments: fractional technology

rectangle_with_text (4) (1)

Fractional laser treatment is a non-invasive treatment that uses a device to deliver a laser beam divided into thousands of microscopic treatment zones that target a fraction of the skin at a time. Over the past few years, fractional technology has become very advanced and given dermatologists and skin care professionals a better tool to treat sun-damaged and aging skin. While ablative laser treatments work mainly on the epidermis (surface skin cells) and non-ablative treatments work solely on dermal collagen (mid-layer of skin), only fractional laser treatment works on both layers of the skin.

Combined with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Infrared (IR), laser fractional technology can be used to treat unsightly issues, such as age spots, sunspots, fine lines, medium wrinkles, large pores, elastosis, dull skin and rhytids, among others.

The Many Types of Hair Extensions

rectangle_with_text (2)

Hair extensions are amazing for many reasons, including their ability to instantly glam up any look. Whether you have short hair and want to add length, or thin hair and want to add thickness, hair extensions are the perfect easy-to-use option.

Clip In Hair Extensions
Clip in hair extensions are great for many reasons and are the most temporary type of extensions. They can be applied or removed in just minutes, making them great for hair styles where you want to make a statement, even if for only one night!

Weave Hair Extension
With weaves, natural hair is braided into what is known as a corn row. Weaves work best on those with medium to thick hair. Ensure that when getting a weave done, hair is not braided too tight as the scalp is very sensitive. As well, if the extension is too heavy, it can actually cause the natural hair to fall out.

Pre-Bonded Hair Extensions
Hair extension strands are bonded to the natural hair with various types of adhesives, such as keratin, glue, plant based and petroleum based adhesives. More discrete than a weave or clip in, pre-bonded hair extensions look very natural. As well, they are permanent for up to six months, and easy to maintain, since you maintain them much the same way you do your natural hair.

Product highlight: Elite Hair Extensions
elite-hair-extensions_1-510x600Made of 100% human hair, Elite Extensions add instant length, body and volume. Since they are clip-in, they do not damage your natural hair. Available in a variety of shades and colours, you can add highlights without chemicals or expensive salon visits.

How to Achieve Amazing Results Without Going Under the Knife

facebook-AD-FINAL edit

Aging is something that women have been trying to avoid forever. Over time, skin gets degraded of its elasticity and collagen, which is supposed to provide structural support. And with so many different treatment options available, it can become quite overwhelming, but we’re here to help. Canada MedLaser is proud to be the only clinic in North America to combine three amazing treatments in one. Using infrared, radio frequency and IPL, you will see effective, quick and safe results in just a few treatments. This popular face lifting treatment is revolutionary in fighting the inevitable signs of aging, including sagging, drooping skin.

  • even out skin tone

  • minimize pore

  • tighten and tone skin

  • encourage collagen reorganization, allowing for visibly firmer skin

  • melt the fat by penetrating to the subcutaneous tissue below the dermis

  • lift sagging brow lines

  • reduce the appearance of fine lines

What exactly is a Laser Face Lifting Treatment?

Using three different technologies, this very unique treatment is only offered at Canada MedLaser.

  1. IR, or infrared technology, is minimally invasive and requires no downtime. Using an infrared light source (a laser), skin is tightened by heating the collagen under the skin’s surface, causing the skin to contract (tighten). Results are immediate and noticeable right after the treatment is completed.
  2. RF, or radio frequency, is a great option for those looking to combat early signs of aging, and get rid of loose or sagging skin. RF energy is able to penetrate deep into the skin and affect the deeper dermis and subcutaneous layers, causing tightening and improvements to the underlying tissue structure. Skin is heated and fat is instantly melted away.

  3. IPL, or intense pulsed light, is a great option for skin resurfacing.Using heat, the light is attracted to the melanin in the dermis, at the same time, damaged skin cells and fibers can be removed, and new, healthy collagen fibers be stimulated. The new collagen, which results in the tightened skin, can last years, making results long-lasting and cost-effective.

Fact or Fiction: the Sun is Bad for Me?

Sun damage

Summer is one of the best times of the year; warm weather tends to improve one’s mood greatly. But is what we have been taught growing up true – is the sun really bad for you? Whether you have fair skin or dark skin, thinking about sun exposure is a good idea because you don’t want to get burned or get heat stroke. We break down the game of ‘good-bad-good’ about the sun:

Myth: a base tan protects you
A tan is your body’s reaction to UV exposure, which is what produces melanin, the pigment that colours your skin. Getting a tan is a sign that damage has already been done. In fact, having already tan skin only provides the SPF equivalent of about a 4, which is not high enough to prevent against any further damage.

Myth: I have dark skin, so I don’t need to worry
Many people with darker skin will have a lower risk of skin cancer, but they are not immune. Darker skin can also burn, it just takes more heat to do it. Although very dark skin has a natural SPF, sunscreen should always be worn. As well, since things like very tanned skin are harder to pinpoint in darker complexions, skin cancer can also be harder to diagnose.

Myth: as long as I protect my face, it’s okay
Skin cancer isn’t limited to just your face, and you can get it on your arms, legs, back feet and chest. Make sure to apply sunscreen everywhere, since signs of aging can also be accelerated to improper exposure to the sun.

Myth: anything above SPF 15 is a waste
The number beside an SPF indicates how long it would take you to sunburn if you were not wearing any sunscreen at all. As well, SPF 30 is not necessarily twice as good as an SPF 30. SPF 15 blocks about 94% of UVB rays, while an SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. That being said, sunscreen is only as effective as how well you apply it. Sunscreen must be applied liberally at least 30 minutes prior to initial exposure, and then reapplied every two hours or so, and especially after getting wet or sweating.

Myth: I don’t need sunscreen if it’s not ‘peak’ tanning hours
The likelihood of burning is greatest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun is directly overhead. Although this is considered to be peak hours, tanning at any hour of the day isn’t safe. Although UVB rays peak mid-day, UVA rays, which contribute to aging and some skin cancers, are present all day long. Even on cloudy days, the UV rays are still present; clouds block infrared rays, so you don’t feel hot, but they only block 20% of UV rays, so you can still get burned.

A Global Snapshot of the Digital World

Global snapshot

Digital is continuing to grow at a rapid pace. The year of 2015 is proving to be the year that digital marketing surpasses traditional advertising, which forces businesses and agencies to ramp up their marketing game. More people are on social media, which indicates that social media advertising is getting stronger. Digital platforms also want businesses to provide more valuable content to consumers through data-driven marketing, and mobile continues to be on the top of everyone’s list.

How the digital world has evolved over the past 12 months

Internet users

What do these numbers mean for you?
This is just the beginning in terms of how the population is responding to technology. Mobile is one to really watch out for, as social media continues to expand its reach to apps that let people access their profiles whenever and wherever they want.

In Canada alone, there are 33 million active internet users, which represents a 93% penetration of the country’s population. More specifically, since 2014, there has been an 11% growth in the number of active users, and that number continues to increase (Source: We Are Social). Trends also show that mobile, more specifically video, is the one to watch, as 27% of mobile users are watching videos on their smartphone, compared to only 24% who are using their smartphone for social media (Source: We Are Social). For businesses to stay ahead of the game, they will most certainly have to develop content that is interactive to keep customers engaged in the long run.

Why Some Brands Fail and Other Succeed

Today, Wal-Mart Canada just announced major plans to expand. This shouldn’t come as a big surprise, considering Wal-Mart is one of the biggest brands in the world. What does come as a surprise? The fact that they are expanding into Canada, while other brands are failing miserably. Take Target as an example. Seen as Wal-Mart’s biggest competitor, they were always fretted with criticism for their lack of product and higher prices. Many thought that the popular US-brand would give consumers more choice and options, but expanding too fast and to poor locations made them fail miserably. Wal-Mart seems to have found their stride, and has been able to deliver on their commitment to offer a wide range of products and services. Moving with the times, rather than against them, the $340 million investment by Wal-Mart will include an expanding network of supercentres, accelerating e-commerce business, and in-store pick up services.

Lately, other Canadian brands have also left the marketplace. Just last week, iconic Canadian brand Parasuco announced it filed for bankruptcy and will close all seven stores in Canada. The Montreal-based retailer said that it will continue to sell its products online, and will focus their efforts on wholesale, licensing and distribution. The retailer joins a long list of other brands including Sony Corp., Mexx Canada, Smart Set, Jones New York, Jacob and Sears who are either closing all of their stores or seriously retreating in an effort to restructure.

When and What Makes Good Content

A website is nothing without great content to support it. Once customers reach your website, the content they see has to be engaging to not only keep them interested but to stay on your site long enough to convert.

A good content calendar will help streamline the upload process, but the question becomes – what should you post and how often?

  1. Social media: social media is a tricky thing because depending on your audience, response times might be morning, evening, weekday or weekend. Keeping an eye on social signals is key; because it will not only tell you when people most response to your postings, but what type of content they like the best.
    • Facebook – you should be posting minimum 3 times per week, maximum 10 times per week and aim for quality over quantity.
    • Twitter – there are no set rules and no maximum. You should be posting good quality content whenever you have it available.
    • LinkedIn – minimum 2 times per week, maximum 5 times per week. Aim for more formal and technical content around your business and industry.
    • Google+ – minimum 3 times per week, maximum 10 times per week. Use relevant keywords to increase your ranking in a Google search.
  2. Blogs: if you are planning on creating a successful blog, you need people to find it and the best way to do this is to get search engines to list you. The more pages your site has, the more likely people are to find it. Posting every day is hard work, and if you start, you have to be able to maintain this schedule over time. You should always aim for quality over quantity, so posting once a week is more than enough while you get started. As you have more content, you can post more frequently.
  3. Resources: a resources page is good to have since it helps build your brand’s authority. A resource page can build traffic, boost your site’s reputation and gives you a place to link to your best content. It also helps your readers quickly find what they need, even things they didn’t know they needed. There is no rule of thumb with when to post to your resources page; post whenever you have created a resource. Sample resources include: marketing kits, webinars, informational videos and e-books.
